CONTEXT
The country rises to 120.00 meters above sea level is about 5 km from Cassino.

HISTORY
The name of Sant'Elia is mentioned for the first time in the "Chronicon Casinense" at the time of the Saracen devastation (859 and 866). In Roman times the current Santelian territory was included in that of the ancient Casinum, as documented by the surviving inscriptions.
Pre-Roman and Roman archaeological finds have been found in the territory: polygonal walls from the 4th or 3rd century BC, remains of two Roman bridges, long and well preserved sections of a Roman aqueduct from the Claudian era (1st century AD), remains of columns and pediments of Roman villas and sacred buildings, Latin epigraphs.
The history of the village is closely linked to that of the nearby Benedictine monastery of Montecassino: in fact it was founded, on a hill to the left of the Rapido river, by the abbot Mansone di Montecassino around the year 990 and took its name from a small church dedicated to the Holy Prophet, existing at the time just below the new town, right near the river, where even today you can admire the upper part of a Roman bridge called Sant'Elia Vecchio.
