THE AREA: TRIDENTE RIONE CAMPO MARZIO
Perhaps the liveliest area of the city, known and loved by citizens and tourists who flock there in large numbers every day of the year, the Trident is the true beating heart of Rome.
Formerly occupied by urban gardens and vineyards and by the port area of Ripetta, the "Trident" took shape between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries following the major urban planning interventions carried out to connect the Porta del Popolo with the major basilicas.
Great architects and artists of the caliber of Antonio di Sangallo and Raffaello took part in the renovation work on the Trident, who were responsible for reorganizing Via di Ripetta and Via del Babuino, Domenico Fontana who was responsible for the raising of the Flaminio Obelisk on Piazza del Popolo, and Pietro and Gian Lorenzo Bernini who created, respectively, the Fontana della Barcaccia and the internal and external restoration of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The architect Giuseppe Valadier was responsible for the radical transformation of Piazza del Popolo and its suggestive elliptical shape.
The area takes its name from a weapon, the trident, composed of a spear with three prongs: Piazza del Popolo constitutes the base from which the three streets that compose it branch off: Via di Ripetta on the right which ends in Via della Scrofa, Via del Babuino on the left which ends in Piazza di Spagna and Via del Corso in the center which ends in Piazza Venezia.
Today, the Trident is the unmissable stop for shopping lovers, thanks to the luxury and high fashion ateliers, true temples of style of the most exclusive Italian and international brands, which are concentrated here.
