THE AREA
The Pearl of the Adriatic, this is how the village of Silvi, a town in the Province of Teramo, is defined, framed by the splendid beaches of the Adriatic coast and a suggestive view of the Gran Sasso.
Formerly called Silva, in relation to the area's rich vegetation, or Castel Belfiore or Castrum Silvi (in the Middle Ages), Silvi stands on the slopes of the hills of Città Sant'Angelo and Atri.
It is characterised by a seaside part, Silvi Marina, created during the 19th century by fishermen who moved closer to the coast, while its historical centre is located in the hilly part, Silvi Alta, of medieval origins, from which one can enjoy suggestive views.

Silvi Marina is the first seaside resort in the Teramo area that one encounters coming from Pescara. The charming Silvi Alta or also called Silvi Paese also belongs to the municipality of Silvi Marina. The origin of the name Silvi has different versions, the first claiming that it derives from a small temple dedicated to Silvano, the Italic god protector of flocks and shepherds; the second instead traces the name back to Silva, which in ancient times meant a village rich in vegetation. Silvi in the early 1900s was the most important seafaring town together with Pescara and Giulianova, and these origins can be found by visiting the northern part of Silvi where the fishermen's village was located. It should be remembered that the first inhabited settlements on the coast date back to Roman times, linked to the ancient Municipium of Atri (a well-known municipality that gave its name to the Adriatic Sea, from whose dominion Silvi separated only in 1833) and associated with the Macrinum port (at the mouth of the Piomba torrent) and the Port of Cerrano, the nerve centre of the Abruzzi coast, but also of the Adriatic in general. Barbarian invasions and natural events marked the decline and disappearance of these coastal settlements and their relocation to the safer hills of the interior. From the second half of the 19th century, the Silvi marina resumed its development thanks to fishermen and noble families from Atri attracted by the beauty of the area, a development that was further accelerated with the birth of the Adriatic railway in 1863.

Silvi is characterised by its vegetation and pine forests, and its very long beach (6 km) of fine white sand, ideal for children, also thanks to the seabed that slopes very gently, providing shallow waters for several metres from the coast. For those who enjoy long walks or bicycle rides accompanied by the sea breeze, this is the ideal place. Silvi's beauty also lies in the succession of gentle hills that surround it, which differentiate it from other well-known locations on the Adriatic. On one of these hills stands the aforementioned medieval village of Silvi Alta. Silvi has been awarded the European Blue Flag for years for the cleanliness of its waters and the efficiency of its services. Thanks to these factors, today Silvi is one of the most popular seaside resorts in Abruzzo and is also known outside the region.
