THE AREA
The Trullo neighborhood, almost 90 years after its construction, is a continuously evolving neighborhood in the southern quadrant of a city that has continued to expand and grow. In the 70s and 80s the neighborhood managed to maintain a strong social fabric, with initiatives linked to associations and parishes that involved and animated the neighbourhood.
Since the 2000s, a rebirth of the neighborhood began linked to the artistic and cultural movements of the Poets Anonymous der Trullo, seven children from the public housing, all identified by a pseudonym, and the Painters Anonymous der Trullo. The union of poetry and art is celebrated in the third edition of the international street poetry festival in 2015.
Dozens of artists from all over Italy arrive at the Trullo and leave behind large-scale mural paintings that transform the streets of the neighborhood into a kind of open-air gallery. A widespread museum created by street artists, today a destination for walks and guided tours, which continues to be enriched with works over the years.
There are many faces of women among the painted portraits, from Frida Kahlo to Greta Thunberg, to the singer Gabriella Ferri, to the astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti. And other faces, including those of the neighbourhood's inhabitants, color viale Ventimiglia, via del Trullo, via Massa Marittima, via Brugnato and the other streets of the neighbourhood.
The works that color the neighborhood, in addition to their artistic value, are not just street art. Here art merges with the faces and voices of the inhabitants and becomes a symbol of an entire neighborhood, the artistic expression shared with the inhabitants and the desire for redemption of a community in continuous search for its own cultural identity, capable of reacting to difficulties, yesterday and today.
Not just art. A redevelopment and regeneration operation is underway in the neighborhood which has led to the demolition and burial of 15 kilometers of electricity lines with 65 pylons, which have crossed the neighborhood for years. A regeneration is expected soon with the expansion of the pedestrian area.
