THE AREA AND THE FARMHOUSE
Stone, wood and tuff bricks. It is these ancient materials which, brought to light, reveal the ancient history of this respectfully renovated farmhouse in the countryside of Genazzano. The country that hosts it is a center of great historical and artistic interest, located on the border between the provinces of Rome and that of Frosinone. The entire town is built on a narrow spur of volcanic tufa, at an altitude of 375 metres, on a hill which slopes down from the southern foothills of the Prenestini Mountains, to immerse itself in the valley of the Sacco river. We are 45 kilometers from the capital, Rome, easily reachable by car or train thanks to the nearby town of Valmontone (8 km away), which hosts an exit of the A1 motorway and the railway station of the Cassino-Roma regional line, which in 25 minutes it reaches Termini Station.
In the historic center of the town, the imposing Colonna Castle stands out, an ancient fief of power of one of the most noble families in Italian history in the late Middle Ages. The castle is connected to the municipal park by a bridge which still today shows the glories of the past, thanks to its grandeur and elegance.
Already known in the times of ancient Rome, when it was a holiday destination for the most noble families, the Borgo di Genazzano was officially established in the 11th century, to subsequently become a precious fiefdom of the Colonna family which, from the Baronial Palace that bears its name , controlled the passage to Naples and Rome. The town was the birthplace of Pope Martin V, born Oddone Colonna in 1368, and of Giovanni Bracaleone de Carlonibus, better known as Brancaleone, who went down in history as one of the knights of the Challenge of Barletta. The official coat of arms of the town itself owes its conception to the Challenge of Barletta, which took place in 1503, which saw 13 Italian knights in opposition, who defeated 13 French knights. The participation of the Genazzanese knight Giovanni Brancaleone gave reason to the municipal administration, in the second half of the nineteenth century, to represent the city coat of arms by inserting thirteen white and thirteen light blue triangles, one for each knight. Every year, to celebrate this victory, a performance is staged in the streets of the town.
Our Casale, located not far from the entrance arch to the town, dates back to 1569, the year of foundation recorded in the official documents exhumed and collected thanks to a careful and meticulous research and collection work in the state archives. It is a dwelling that recalls the frugal life habits of our ancestors and which smells of the ancient, of flavors that time has not covered. However, everything is "packaged" with modern services and all the comforts of a large villa. In the tavern, with a vaulted roof, there are still mangers and yokes for tying up the animals, while dozens of agricultural tools have emerged in the surrounding land, jealously preserved and displayed in the tuff cellar, which remind us of the hard work and the unceasing commitment of the generations that preceded the advent of the industrial revolution.
The structure of the farmhouse has undergone several renovations in all these years, but fortunately all the works have been carried out by enlightened owners, who have respected its spirit and soul. Bricks, wood, stones and terracotta, all the ancient and original materials of the structure have been recovered or protected with great care. In many parts of the structure it is in fact possible to come across the original stones, the old peasant floor, as well as the original wooden beams of the supporting structure. The walls have been plastered for livability needs but, where possible, the natural beauty of the exposed stone has been maintained.
The ancient farmhouse is perfectly located in a 2-hectare natural park, characterized by the presence of numerous centuries-old trees, fruit trees and entertainment areas of various types. Living in this place or simply spending a weekend there represents a true introspective experience, a journey of the soul that stimulates all our senses:
• sight: for the majesty of the greenery and the kaleidoscope of multicolored blooms, especially in spring;
• smell: for the pure smell of the countryside, which changes with each season and permeates all spaces and everyday life;
• touch: thanks to the vibrations of history that these stones and old wood are able to transmit;
• hearing: for the incessant sounds of the wild and multifaceted nature of the surrounding forest;
• taste: for the thousand flavors that the earth gives us and which are enhanced by the orchards and vegetable gardens of this property.
Those who enter this place find ancient stone, large wooden beams, pebbles, changing colours, trees, fresh fruit, animals and lots of nature. So it was once, so it is today. A place that has spanned the years and eras while maintaining its identity intact. (Graziano S - Heidi's cabin)
